This Mother’s Day I wanted to do something different with my girls for their Grandmothers. I’ve been collecting Mason Jars for a while now, not really for any specific reason, just thought they might come in handy one day for something. So, I researched Pinterest – of course, and came across several different versions of a photo in a mason jar. It was the perfect idea! Grandmothers LOVE receiving pictures, and this was something the girls could create with little help from Mom. Below I’ve shared a few of our steps from start to finish. (all images taken with my iphone…I seem to always use that when we are being creative with our DIY projects, lol).
I hope it inspires you to create your own, it was pretty easy! Which gets a thumbs up for this busy Mommy!
Step 1. Place your mason jars (or any other jars) on a piece of wax paper
Step 2. Cut out your “window” for your image to peek through. I used Paintable Clear Film (I had it from other home projects, you can find it at your local hardware store for about 1.00. Vinyl also works well or anything that easily removes from the glass).
Step 3. Paint the outside of your jar with Acrylic Paint. Let dry for a min, then peel off the clear film or vinyl and carefully clean any edges of your window if needed. (you will want to remove the clear film before your paint dries)
Next I took the jars outside and gave them a clear coat, the only draw back was that it left a bit of a film on my glass window. My fix is in the next images.
After the jars had dried, I cut out my image and a small piece of painters tape to adhere the photo to the inside of the mason jar. Below you can see the image looks hazy because of the clear coat of spray.
In order to see the image clearly, I just used a nail polish remover that contained acetone. I carefully rubbed to the edge of my square window and viola, a clear image once again.
My girls are quite girly, so of course we added some bling for the Grandmas. All in all it was a fun, simple, easy project that I’m sure we will be doing again.
