Borax Crystal Hearts

With Valentines Day just around the corner my girls and I thought it would be fun to do a Valentine’s science experiment that still borderd being “crafty”. Thus lovely Pinterest led us to “borax crystal hearts”, or as my girls referred to them, “rock hearts” because they are hard as a rock, lol.

We found the great “how to”, complete with why borax creates crystals when mixed with boiling  water (and left overnight), over at  Club Chica Circle – http://club.chicacircle.com/how-to-make-heart-shaped-borax-crystals/

They have a great step by step that made our Valentines Day project easy and fun. Today I will be giving you a few snapshots of our crafty time. To get the full “how to” visit the Club Chica link above.

start with 1pint of boiling hot water (we soon realized that we needed to fill up our jar with 2 pints, so we doubled the borax ratio.

Next we added food coloring for fun.

We placed our shaped pipe cleaners into the jars

After 24hours we could see the pipe cleaners now covered with crystals!

And after pulling them from the jars, removing them from their string…this is what we had.

After our hearts dried we glued cute ribbon around the top for hanging

Our Valentine’s Day borax crystal hearts!
